Methadone and suboxone are widely used to treat heroin addiction. But treating addiction through use of other addictive substances has long been an issue of debate. This debate is becoming more heated, as more and more individuals are seeking methadone and rehab for suboxone addiction.

Medical Expert Opinion Regarding Treating Addiction with Addictive Substances
A recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Psychiatry assessed effectivity of long-term opioid medications. This project determined that some heroin-addicted patients may be better treated through use of a new pain medication called hydromorphone (HDM), than by using suboxone or methadone. Taking the stance that untreated opioid use disorder is a risk of premature death, study experts believe that the new drug hydromorphone is effective as an alternative to the previously used addiction medications for these patients. They also believe that not using one of these medications is a greater risk than the possibility of addiction the treatments carry.

Treating Addiction to Save a Life
Whether you or someone you love is addicted to heroin or other opioids, getting the help you need is lifesaving. While the possibility of developing another addiction isn’t ideal, this treatment is still a means of ensuring freedom from the more harrowing day-to-day existence of heroin addiction or painkiller addiction.
